New Delhi, Oct 10: The Supreme Court on Friday rejected a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking a probe and structural reforms in drug safety regulations following the deaths of children in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan allegedly caused by toxic cough syrups.

A bench led by Chief Justice B.R. Gavai, along with Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and K. Vinod Chandran, dismissed the petition after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta opposed it, questioning the intent behind the plea. He remarked that the petitioner “reads something in the newspaper and immediately comes to court.”

Although the bench had initially considered issuing a notice, it ultimately chose to dismiss the matter. Mehta further pointed out that states such as Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh were already taking strong action and that adequate legal mechanisms to address such issues were in place.

The bench also questioned advocate Vishal Tiwari about the number of PILs he had filed in the Supreme Court so far. When informed that he had moved eight to 10 such petitions previously, the bench ended the hearing with a single word from the Chief Justice: “Dismissed.”
