Supreme Court grants bail to former Ranchi DC Chhavi Ranjan

New Delhi, Oct 10: The Supreme Court on Friday granted bail to former Ranchi DC Chhavi Ranjan with certain conditions.

With this order, the way has now been cleared for Chhavi Ranjan to be released from jail. He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on May 4, 2023, and has been in judicial custody since then.

The bail plea was heard in the Supreme Court by a bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi.

Earlier, both the PMLA (Prevention of Money Laundering Act) court and the Jharkhand High Court had rejected his bail plea. On August 6, the bench of Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad of the High Court had dismissed his petition, refusing to grant him bail.

After his plea was rejected by the lower court and the High Court, Chhavi Ranjan, accused in a land scam case, approached the Supreme Court, which granted him bail.

The case in which he has been granted bail involves the purchase and sale of land located in Bariatu under the Bargai circle in Ranchi, which was under the possession of the Army.

Apart from former Deputy Commissioner and IAS officer Chhavi Ranjan, the ED has also named prominent businessman Vishnu Agrawal, revenue sub-inspector of Bargai circle Bhanu Pratap Prasad, Pradeep Bagchi, land dealers Afsar Ali, Imtiaz Khan, Talha Khan, Faiyaz Khan, Mohammad Saddam, Amit Agrawal, and Dilip Ghosh as accused in the case.
