PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, Oct 29: Ahead of the Ghatshila Assembly by-polls, the East Singhbhum district administration has announced a ban on the sale and distribution of liquor in the constituency to maintain law and order during the election period.

District Election Officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner Karn Satyarthi has declared dry days in the Ghatshila Assembly area from 5 p.m. on November 9 to 5 p.m. on November 11, in accordance with Section 26 of the Excise Act and Section 135(c) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. The provision mandates a 48-hour dry period before the conclusion of polling.

Strict Prohibition on Liquor Sale and Consumption

During this period, the sale, distribution, or serving of any intoxicating liquor—whether spirituous, fermented, or otherwise—will be strictly prohibited in hotels, restaurants, shops, and any public or private premises within the polling area.

The deputy commissioner cautioned that violations of the order would be treated as serious offences, punishable by up to six months’ imprisonment, a fine of ₹2,000, or both. Any seized liquor will be confiscated and destroyed as per legal provisions.

Strict Enforcement Ordered

The excise department, police, and local block officials have been directed to ensure strict enforcement of the dry-day order and take immediate action against violators.

DC Karn Satyarthi urged citizens to cooperate with the administration to maintain the sanctity and fairness of the electoral process and to refrain from buying, selling, or consuming alcohol during the designated dry period.
