New Delhi, Nov 21: Thousands of farmers who were previously unable to claim insurance for crop losses caused by wild animals or prolonged waterlogging will now receive compensation under an expanded Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) coverage.

Announcing the policy update, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said the much-awaited provision has finally been approved, addressing two long-standing demands of the farming community.

In a message shared with cultivators, Chouhan explained that until now, losses resulting from animal intrusion or flooding due to excessive rainfall were not included in the crop insurance scheme. He added that these categories have now officially been incorporated, ensuring financial relief in both situations.

“If wild animals destroy a farmer’s standing crop, the farmer will now be eligible for compensation. Similarly, if heavy rainfall leads to waterlogging and damages fields, that too will be covered,” the minister assured.
