Dhanbad, Dec 9: Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani said India must define its own development trajectory at a time when global alliances are becoming increasingly fractured and driven by strategic self-preservation.
Speaking as the chief guest at the Centenary Celebration of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad on Tuesday, he said that in the 21st century, a nation’s true sovereignty would rely on its command over natural resources and energy systems.
Adani noted that IIT (ISM) was born out of a farsighted national aspiration—an early recognition that no country can rise without understanding the strength beneath its soil.
“Master the resources below our feet, and master the energy that fuels our rise—these are the twin pillars of India’s economic independence,” he said.

Adani warns against ‘narrative colonisation’
Adani cautioned against what he termed “narrative colonisation,” arguing that countries historically responsible for global emissions now attempt to dictate how developing nations should pursue growth.
“If we do not control our own narrative, our aspirations will be delegitimised and our right to progress portrayed as a global offence,” he warned.
He highlighted India’s sustainability achievements, noting that the country has already crossed 50% non-fossil installed capacity despite being among the world’s lowest per-capita emitters.
Adani also cited the group’s major investments, from the Carmichael coal mine in Australia to the Khavda renewable energy park in Gujarat.
Adani announces 50 paid internships and new excellence centre
During his address, Adani announced 50 annual paid internships for IIT ISM students, along with pre-placement offers.
He also committed to establishing the “Adani 3S Mining Excellence Centre” in partnership with TEXMiN, aiming to strengthen industry–academia collaboration.
Calling this era India’s “Second Freedom Struggle”—a struggle for economic and resource sovereignty—Adani urged students to “dream fearlessly and act relentlessly as custodians of India’s core capabilities.”

Prof. Prem Vrat, Chairman of the Board of Governors, described the centenary as a celebration of a vision born in 1926 and strengthened by generations of scholars and engineers.
IIT ISM Director Prof. Sukumar Mishra delivered the welcome address, while Deputy Director Prof. Dheeraj Kumar proposed the vote of thanks.
