Ranchi, January 9: Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar on Friday administered the oath of office to Justice Mahesh Sharadchandra Sonak as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court at Birsa Mandap, Lok Bhawan.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren was present at the event. After the oath-taking, the Governor and the Chief Minister congratulated Justice Sonak and wished him success in his new role.
Mahesh Sharadchandra Sonak’s tenure as Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court will continue until November 28, 2026. He has been transferred from the Bombay High Court to Jharkhand.

Those present included Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, Minister Radha Krishna Kishore, Minister Deepika Pandey Singh, Speaker of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly Rabindra Nath Mahto, judges of the Jharkhand High Court, senior IAS and IPS officers, High Court officials, senior advocates, and other dignitaries.

Background and career
Born on November 28, 1964, Justice M. S. Sonak completed his schooling at Don Bosco High School, Panaji, Goa. He earned his B.Sc. degree from Dhempe College of Arts and Science and completed his LL.B. from M.S. College of Law, Panaji, affiliated with the University of Bombay, securing a First Class.
He enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa in October 1988 and practised at the Panaji Bench of the Bombay High Court.
Justice Sonak’s areas of practice included civil and constitutional law, labour and service law, environmental law, commercial and tax laws, company law, and public interest litigation.
During his legal career, Justice Sonak served as Additional Standing Counsel for the Central Government, Special Counsel for the State Government, and represented various statutory corporations.
He was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on June 21, 2013.
