Plastic surgeons hold CME in Ranchi, highlight advances in hand reimplantation

Ranchi, March 26: The Jharkhand unit of the Bihar Jharkhand Plastic Surgeons Association organised a CME at Hotel Ramada, Ranchi, focusing on advancements in plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Dr Prince Gupta spoke on hand reimplantation and transplantation procedures, as well as on issues related to organ transplants and potential solutions. Dr Vikrant Ranjan, CEO of Jharkhand Charitable Hospital, Ranchi, presented cases of reimplantation of severed parts, especially fingers, at different levels. He stated that if a severed part is preserved and transported properly, successful reimplantation is possible even up to 16–18 hours after injury. He advised keeping the separated part in an airtight polythene bag, then placing it inside a bag filled with ice, ensuring that it does not come in direct contact with ice or water.

Dr Priyanka Karketta, Professor in the Plastic Surgery Department at RIMS, shared an update on the department’s status and highlighted surgical challenges arising from a faculty shortage.
