PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, April 15: A fierce encounter broke out on Wednesday between security forces and Maoists in the Saranda forests of Jharkhand’s Chaibasa, highlighting ongoing security challenges in the region.

The gun battle began when a joint team of the Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA), Jharkhand Jaguar, and district police launched an operation based on intelligence inputs. The inputs suggested the presence of a Maoist squad led by wanted commander Misir Besra, who carries a bounty of Rs 1 crore.

Gunfight in Dense Saranda Forest

As security forces moved to cordon off the area between Marang Ponga and Baliba villages under Chhota Nagra police station limits, Maoists opened heavy fire. This led to a prolonged exchange of gunfire.

Security personnel responded and eventually gained the upper hand during the operation.

Casualties and Injuries

Initial reports indicate that at least four Maoists were killed, while several others are believed to have been injured. However, official confirmation is still awaited due to dense forest cover and difficult terrain, which have slowed recovery efforts.

A CoBRA Jawan was injured during the encounter and is being airlifted to Ranchi for advanced treatment. His condition is reported to be stable.

Top Maoist Leaders Suspected Present

Sources suggest that senior Maoist operatives, including Mochu, Sagen Angaria, and Ashwin, were part of the group. Misir Besra, one of the most wanted Maoist leaders in the region, is believed to have been attempting to relocate when the forces intercepted the squad.

Combing Operations Intensified

Following the encounter, security forces have launched intensive combing operations across the Saranda region. Exit routes have been sealed to prevent any escape.

The operation is seen as a major development in ongoing anti-Maoist efforts in Jharkhand, especially in the Kolhan region, a long-time stronghold of Left-Wing Extremism.
