IIT (ISM) Dhanbad celebrates World Earth Day with focus on sustainability, innovation

 

Dhanbad, April 22: IIT (ISM) Dhanbad marked World Earth Day 2026 with a focus on sustainability, innovation, and collective action at a programme held at the i2h Building on Wednesday. The event was organised by the EIACP Programme Centre of the Department of Environmental Science & Engineering in collaboration with Insearch NGO, Dhanbad.

Focus on sustainability and collective action

Aligned with the global theme “Our Power, Our Planet,” the programme highlighted how individuals, institutions, and technology can work together to address environmental challenges. It emphasised sustainable lifestyles, environmental innovation, and youth engagement as key drivers of change.

Adarsh Agarwal, Director, Office of the Director General of Audit (Mines), C&AG, Kolkata, attended as Chief Guest and stressed the importance of accountability and governance in environmental management. He underlined the role of public institutions in ensuring compliance and promoting sustainable practices.

Guest of Honour Prof. Prabhakar Singh, Founder & Chancellor of Sona Devi University, Ghatsila, highlighted the need for environmental education and community participation to achieve long-term sustainability goals.

The programme was held under the patronage of Prof. Dheeraj Kumar, Deputy Director of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. Prof. Alok Sinha, Coordinator of the EIACP Centre, spoke about initiatives in environmental awareness, capacity building, and sustainable development, while Prof. Suresh Pandian, Co-coordinator, emphasised community engagement and skill development.

Student innovation, outreach initiatives highlighted

A key highlight was the poster-making competition showcase, where students presented AI-generated posters on environmental sustainability, reflecting a blend of creativity and technology.

Students from Sona Devi University, Ghatsila, also participated in an exposure visit to the department and EIACP Centre, gaining insights into ongoing research and outreach activities.

The event witnessed participation from students, faculty, researchers, and environmental advocates, and concluded with a collective pledge to adopt eco-friendly practices and work towards a cleaner, greener future.
