Lok Adalat in Jharkhand settles 24 lakh cases worth Rs 8,539 crore

Ranchi, May 9: The second National Lok Adalat of 2026 was inaugurated virtually from Ranchi on May 9 by Jharkhand High Court Judge and Executive Chairman of Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority (JHALSA), Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad.

Speaking during the event, Justice Sujit Narayan said lawyers and mediators play a crucial role in the disposal of pending cases and in ensuring speedy and affordable justice for people.

Over 24 Lakh Cases Resolved Across Jharkhand

According to JHALSA, a total of 22,92,849 pre-litigation cases and 1,55,340 pending court cases were disposed of during the National Lok Adalat held across Jharkhand. Matters worth Rs 8,53,98,66,392 were settled during the proceedings.

Justice Sujit Narayan described the National Lok Adalat as “not just a programme, but a festival of justice,” stressing the importance of legal awareness and community participation.

Legal Awareness and Faster Justice Emphasised

JHALSA Member Secretary Kumari Ranjana Asthana said the Legal Services Authority has been carrying out awareness programmes across districts under the guidance of Justice Sujit Narayan. She added that public trust in the justice delivery system has strengthened through faster legal processes and outreach initiatives.

Justice Sujit Narayan also highlighted the role of Para Legal Volunteers (PLVs), calling them the “backbone” of the legal system for spreading legal awareness in villages, towns and remote areas.

Ranchi Court Launches New Public Facilities

During the programme, several facilities were inaugurated at the Civil Court campus in Ranchi, including:

  • Didi Cafe
  • A statue of Mahatma Gandhi
  • Vulnerable Witness Deposition Centre
  • Protected Witness Room
  • QR code-generated application system

Cheques were also distributed to beneficiaries during the event. One of the major compensation payouts included Rs 13.2 crore awarded to Geeta Singh in a motor accident compensation case.

High Court Legal Services Committee Also Settles Cases

The Jharkhand High Court Legal Services Committee separately disposed of 18 pending matters during the National Lok Adalat organised within the High Court premises.
