PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, May 19: Jharkhand is reeling under intense heat and humidity, with the Discomfort Index in several districts climbing close to the dangerous 45°C mark, triggering widespread heat stress and raising concerns over dehydration and heat-related illnesses.

Major cities, including Jamshedpur, Ranchi, Daltonganj, Bokaro, Dhanbad, Deoghar, and Hazaribagh, are witnessing sweltering conditions as high temperatures combined with moisture-laden air are making the weather feel significantly hotter than the actual temperature.

Thunderstorms and gusty winds likely across Jharkhand

According to the latest forecast by the weather department, several parts of southern and central Jharkhand are likely to witness thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds over the next few days.

Districts such as Ranchi, Khunti, Gumla, East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum, and Seraikela-Kharsawan may experience thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph.

Jamshedpur and the adjoining Kolhan region are expected to remain vulnerable to sudden weather changes, with heavy cloud build-up likely to increase humidity levels before rain showers bring temporary relief.

Meanwhile, Bokaro, Dhanbad, Ramgarh, and Lohardaga may witness winds of 40–50 kmph along with isolated thunder and lightning activity.

Dry heat may continue in north-western Jharkhand

The weather department has predicted widespread thunderstorm activity across most parts of Jharkhand till May 24. However, districts in north-western Jharkhand, including Palamu, Garhwa, and Latehar, are likely to continue experiencing dry and harsh heat conditions.

Experts warned that prolonged exposure to the prevailing weather conditions could lead to dehydration, fatigue, and heatstroke, especially during peak afternoon hours.

“People should stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight during the afternoon, and remain alert to lightning warnings as unstable weather conditions continue,” officials said.

Pre-monsoon weather pattern intensifies

The coming week is expected to bring a mix of oppressive heat and sudden storm activity, highlighting the changing pre-monsoon weather pattern currently affecting Jharkhand.
