Jamshedpur, June 11: A local resident’s swift intervention helped save the life of an elderly man who allegedly attempted self-immolation near Dhatkidih Lake under the Bistupur police station area on Thursday afternoon.

The victim, identified as Sattar Khan, a resident of Dhatkidih A Block, reportedly arrived at the lakeside carrying petrol. According to eyewitnesses, he allegedly poured the fuel on himself and set himself ablaze, causing panic among people present in the area.

Bystander Rushes to Rescue
Amid the chaos, Mohammad Islam, who works at a nearby vehicle washing centre, rushed to the spot and immediately began efforts to extinguish the flames.

With the help of local residents, he managed to bring the fire under control and rescue the injured man.
His prompt action is believed to have prevented a fatal outcome.

Victim Undergoing Treatment
Police personnel from Bistupur police station reached the scene soon after receiving information and shifted Khan to Tata Main Hospital (TMH) for treatment.
Hospital sources said the victim sustained severe burn injuries and remains in critical condition.
Family Dispute Suspected
Local residents claimed that Khan had been under considerable emotional stress due to a prolonged family dispute.
Following the incident, family members reached the hospital while police initiated an investigation into the circumstances leading to the alleged self-immolation attempt.
Investigators have recovered burnt clothing and other material evidence from the site and are examining all aspects of the case.
Mohammad Islam’s courageous response has drawn appreciation from local residents, who credited his quick action with saving the victim’s life.
