Jamshedpur, July 10: Despite an expected increase in monsoon activity over the coming days, Jharkhand continues to face a significant rainfall deficit, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy rain in several districts on July 13.
According to the IMD’s Ranchi Meteorological Centre, Jharkhand received 172.4 mm of rainfall against the normal 274.9 mm between June 1 and July 9, leaving the state with an overall rainfall deficiency of 37 per cent.
The rainfall shortage has affected almost the entire state. Chatra has recorded the highest deficit at 78 per cent, followed by Garhwa (76 per cent), Godda (66 per cent), Pakur (63 per cent), and Koderma (60 per cent).
Among the Kolhan districts, East Singhbhum received 168.9 mm of rainfall against the normal 320.2 mm, registering a 47 per cent deficit. Seraikela-Kharsawan and West Singhbhum have reported rainfall deficits of 24 per cent and 23 per cent, respectively.
IMD Forecast: Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain Likely
The IMD has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds with speeds of 40–50 kmph at isolated places across Jharkhand on July 10, 11, 12, and 14.
On July 13, heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over the north-eastern districts of Dumka, Deoghar, Giridih, Jamtara, and adjoining Dhanbad, as well as the south-eastern districts of East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum, and Seraikela-Kharsawan. The expected spell of rain could help reduce the prevailing rainfall deficit.
No significant weather warning has been issued for July 15.
Delayed Monsoon Affects Farming Activities
The delayed and below-normal monsoon has impacted agricultural operations in several districts, with farmers awaiting widespread and sustained rainfall to accelerate paddy transplantation and replenish reservoirs.
During the corresponding period last year, monsoon conditions over Jharkhand were comparatively more active, with several districts receiving near-normal rainfall following frequent spells of widespread rain in late June and early July.
Meteorologists expect the upcoming wet spell to improve rainfall distribution across the state. However, they said several rounds of widespread precipitation will still be needed to bridge the existing rainfall deficit.
