Jharkhand to witness thunderstorms, heavy rain from September 23

PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, Sept 19: Jharkhand is likely to experience a fresh spell of unsettled weather from September 21, with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds expected at isolated places across the state. Weather activity is forecast to intensify from September 23, when several districts, particularly in southern and central Jharkhand, may receive heavy rainfall.

According to the latest weather warning, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and winds of 30–40 kmph are likely at isolated places on September 21. Similar conditions may continue on September 22, with stronger winds possible in some areas.

Heavy rain likely in southern, central Jharkhand

The weather system is expected to become more active from September 23. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph at isolated places across Jharkhand.

Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in the south-eastern districts of East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan. Central districts, including Ranchi, Khunti, Ramgarh, Bokaro and Dhanbad, may also receive heavy showers.

The unsettled weather is expected to continue on September 24, with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph likely at isolated places. Heavy rainfall may also occur at isolated locations across the state, pointing to a broader spell of wet weather.

Bay of Bengal system to influence weather

The forecast comes amid the development of a fresh weather system over the Bay of Bengal.

The IMD said an upper-air cyclonic circulation is likely to lead to the formation of a low-pressure area over the North Andaman Sea around September 19. The system is expected to gradually intensify while moving west-northwestwards towards the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coast over the subsequent three to four days.

The system could enhance moisture flow towards eastern and central India, contributing to increased rainfall and thunderstorm activity over Jharkhand.

Odisha has also been placed under warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms during the same period, indicating an active weather pattern over the region.

Jamshedpur may face waterlogging, traffic disruption

In Jamshedpur and other vulnerable areas, heavy showers accompanied by lightning and strong gusts could temporarily disrupt traffic, affect outdoor activities and cause waterlogging in low-lying areas.

Residents have been advised to remain alert during thunderstorms and avoid taking shelter under isolated trees or near exposed structures.

The wet spell may continue into September 25, with thunderstorm and lightning activity likely to persist, according to the extended warning.
