Jamshedpur, September 28: Sona Devi University organised a special research workshop for students and research scholars, focusing on research skills, contemporary methodologies, academic competence, innovation and the effective use of digital tools.
The workshop aimed to improve the quality and originality of academic research while encouraging scholars to connect their work with wider social needs.
In his inaugural address, Shivchandra Jha, Head of the Department of Political Science, said a university’s academic identity was shaped not only by teaching but also by the quality of its research, innovation and knowledge creation.
“Research is not merely a formal process for obtaining a degree. It is a means of discovering new knowledge, critically examining established ideas and finding solutions to complex social problems,” he said.
He stressed the importance of originality, logical reasoning, authenticity, a scientific outlook and social relevance in research.

Scholars Guided on Research Methodology
Prabin Kumar Mahato, faculty member, Research and HPC Division, JCERT, who was the resource person, conducted the technical session on research skills, research competency and innovation.
He guided scholars on selecting research topics, identifying research problems, formulating objectives, conducting literature reviews, analysing data and evidence, drawing conclusions and preparing research papers.
Mahato emphasised that merely compiling available information does not constitute quality research. He said scholars must critically examine existing knowledge and seek to contribute fresh perspectives and findings.
He also highlighted the importance of staying updated with recent academic literature and using digital and technological resources effectively and responsibly.
University Leadership Stresses Research and Innovation
University Registrar Dr Nit Nayana said research and innovation were key indicators of the progress of any higher education institution. She said the university was committed to creating an academic environment where students and scholars could think independently, develop new ideas and contribute meaningfully to knowledge.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Braj Mohan Pat Pingua said universities had a responsibility beyond awarding degrees and should foster curiosity, independent thinking, analytical ability and innovation among students.
He urged research scholars to connect their work with the needs of society and the nation while remaining updated with developments in their respective fields.
Chancellor Prabhakar Singh described research as an important means of strengthening a nation’s intellectual and knowledge resources. He called upon scholars to prioritise originality, quality, discipline, innovation and social relevance.
“Learn, question, analyse and create new knowledge,” he said, urging young researchers to pursue their work with perseverance and dedication.
Research Scholars Participate in Interactive Session
The workshop witnessed active participation from research scholars, who interacted with the resource person and raised questions on research methodology, academic writing, innovation and the use of modern technological resources.
The session provided practical insights into making research more systematic, authentic, original and impactful.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Kanchan Sinha. Faculty members, research scholars and students from various departments attended the workshop.
