Daltonganj, October 8: The Department of Surgery at Medinirai Medical College Hospital (MMCH), Palamu, has successfully performed a laparoscopic Heller’s Myotomy on a 36-year-old patient suffering from the rare swallowing disorder Achalasia Cardia, marking a significant milestone for advanced surgical care in the region.
The patient, Jitendra Ram, a resident of Pandeypur in Untari Road, had been experiencing increasing difficulty in swallowing food and liquids. Following clinical evaluation and investigations, he was diagnosed with Achalasia Cardia, a disorder in which the lower oesophageal sphincter fails to relax normally during swallowing.
The patient is reportedly doing well following the procedure.
Laparoscopic Heller’s Myotomy Performed Successfully
The specialised procedure was performed under the leadership of Dr Sushil Kumar Pandey, Head of the Department of Surgery, along with Dr Sunil Kumar and Dr Virendra Kumar Yadav.
Dr Deepak from the Department of Anaesthesia played an important role in the anaesthetic and peri-operative management of the patient.
Heller’s Myotomy involves dividing the abnormally tight muscle fibres at the lower end of the oesophagus to relieve the functional obstruction and facilitate the passage of food into the stomach. In this case, the procedure was performed using a laparoscopic approach, which involves small incisions and specialised surgical instruments.
Boost to Advanced Surgical Care in Palamu
The successful completion of the procedure marks an important development in the availability of specialised surgical treatment in Palamu and adjoining areas.
The achievement also highlights the expanding capabilities of MMCH Daltonganj in providing advanced surgical care closer to patients, potentially reducing the need for them to travel to distant specialised centres for treatment.
The laparoscopic approach is minimally invasive and, depending on the individual patient’s condition, may offer benefits such as reduced postoperative discomfort, earlier mobilisation and faster recovery.
What Is Achalasia Cardia?
Achalasia Cardia is a relatively rare disorder of the oesophagus in which normal oesophageal movement is impaired and the lower oesophageal sphincter does not relax adequately during swallowing.
This can prevent food and liquids from passing normally into the stomach and may lead to symptoms including:
- Difficulty swallowing food and liquids
- A sensation of food sticking in the chest
- Regurgitation of food
- Chest discomfort
- Progressive weight loss
- Difficulty eating normally
What Is Heller’s Myotomy?
Heller’s Myotomy is an established surgical treatment for Achalasia Cardia. The procedure involves dividing the abnormally tight muscle fibres at the lower end of the oesophagus, thereby relieving the obstruction and allowing food to pass more easily into the stomach.
The successful surgery is being viewed as an important step in the continued development of advanced surgical services at Medinirai Medical College Hospital and could expand access to specialised treatment for patients in Palamu and neighbouring areas.
