Dhanbad, October 29: Dhanbad Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Prabhat Kumar, on Thursday, cautioned people against cyber fraud, particularly scams involving so-called “digital arrest”, and urged them not to share sensitive financial information with anyone.
He was addressing a training programme on “IT & Cyber Security and Cyber Hygiene” organised at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad as part of Vigilance Awareness Week 2026.
The programme was organised by the Office of the Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO) under the Capacity Building Programme during the week being observed from October 26 to November 1. The session focused on emerging cyber threats, digital security and safe online practices to help employees protect institutional information and personal financial assets.
SSP Advises Caution While Using Digital Platforms
Prabhat Kumar highlighted how cybercriminals continually adopt new methods to deceive people and stressed the importance of remaining vigilant while using digital platforms.
He advised people not to share bank account details, card information, passwords, one-time passwords (OTPs) or other sensitive financial information with anyone.
He also recommended keeping international transactions and other banking facilities switched off when not required, wherever such controls are available. Users were advised against downloading applications or APK files from unknown sources and urged to exercise caution before clicking on suspicious links or responding to unfamiliar requests.
‘Digital Arrest’ Is Not a Legal Procedure
The SSP clarified that “digital arrest” is not a legal procedure through which police officials can detain people online and demand money.
He advised people receiving such calls not to panic or transfer money, but to report the matter to the police. He also emphasised the need to spread cyber-safety awareness among children, young people, women and senior citizens to help protect them from online fraud.
IIT (ISM) Plans Cybersecurity Course
During the programme, Deputy Director Prof. Sarat Kumar Das announced that IIT (ISM) Dhanbad plans to introduce a course related to cybersecurity from the next academic session.
The proposed initiative aims to strengthen learning and awareness in the increasingly important field of digital security.
Earlier, Prof. Chandan Guria, Chief Vigilance Officer, delivered the welcome address. Registrar Prabodh Pandey and Deputy Director Prof. Sarat Kumar Das also addressed the gathering.
Winners of Vigilance Quiz Competition Felicitated
The programme also featured the felicitation of winners of the Vigilance Awareness Week 2026 quiz competition. SSP Prabhat Kumar, Deputy Director Prof. Sarat Kumar Das and Registrar Prabodh Pandey distributed prizes to the winners.
Dheeraj Kumar Singh, Assistant Registrar (Vigilance Officer), briefed participants on the activities being organised during Vigilance Awareness Week 2026 and proposed the vote of thanks. Ms. Purabi Das, Junior Superintendent, anchored the programme.
