PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, Jan 5: Several places in southern and central parts of Jharkhand including Jamshedpur, Seraikela-Kharsawan, Chaibasa in West Singhbhum, Khunti and parts of the state capital witnessed a moderately foggy morning today.

The dense fog reduced surface visibility to as low as 700 metres in Jamshedpur and its adjoining areas at around 6.30 am just after sunrise and to 1,000 metres in Ranchi, Bokaro and several other places.

The fog disrupted visibility even on the National Highway-33 that connects Jamshedpur with Ranchi.

Weathermen confirmed that the blanket of shallow fog descended on several areas especially those located along the hilly terrain soon after sunrise. The haze cleared only after 9 am.

The shallow fog took a toll on long-distance buses that were either arriving or departing from Jamshedpur’s Sitaramdera Bus Terminus in Jamshedpur. Most of them were running late.

Western disturbance

Satellite pictures suggested that the western disturbance as a cyclonic circulation lies over north Haryana and the neighbourhood at 3.1 km above mean sea level.

The induced cyclonic circulation lies over southwest Uttar Pradesh and neighbourhood and extends up to 1.5 km above mean sea level.

A fresh western disturbance is likely to affect Northwest India from January 8.

Dry weather

Dry weather prevailed over the state during the past 24 hours while shallow to moderate fog was also recorded at isolated places over north-western and south-eastern parts of the state.

The highest maximum temperature of 27.4°C was recorded at Chaibasa while the lowest minimum temperature of 10.2 °C was recorded at Godda.
