Chandigarh, Feb 3: Citing personal reasons, Banwarilal Purohit, the governor of Punjab and the administrator of Chandigarh, tendered his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday.
“Due to my personal reasons and certain other commitments, I tender my resignation from the post of governor of Punjab and Administrator, Union Territory, Chandigarh. Please accept the same and oblige,” Purohit stated in his letter of resignation.
Met Amit Shah yesterday
A day after meeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi, Purohit tendered his resignation. Their discussion took place several days after the BJP emerged victorious in the Chandigarh mayoral elections, securing all three positions. This outcome dealt a blow to the Congress-AAP alliance, which claimed that the presiding officer had tampered with ballot papers.

Issues with Punjab CM
Purohit and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had been at odds over a number of matters, such as the delays in approving pending bills, holding of Assembly sessions and vice-chancellor appointments.
Appointed Punjab Governor in Aug 2021
Purohit assumed the roles of Punjab governor and Chandigarh administrator in August 2021. Prior to this, he had served as the governor of Assam from 2016 to 2017 and the governor of Tamil Nadu from 2017 to 2021.
In addition, Purohit had represented Nagpur in the Lok Sabha three times, in 1984, 1989, and 1996.
