Daltonganj, February 5: “Why only cervical cancer? Just because one celebrity faked her demise because of cervical cancer and so one should talk about it only,” said Civil Surgeon Dr Anil Kumar.
The civil surgeon, Dr Jitender Kumar, district programme manager Deepak Kumar Gupta, and others held an interactive session with around 40 ANMs to sensitise them and make them create awareness about cancer.
One can beat cancer
“I am not concerned as to faking demise by cervical cancer is improper or unethical, but what my concern is that you can beat cancer and so have this spirit in you in the event of getting afflicted by it,” reminded the civil surgeon.
Dr Anil Kumar declined to make any comment on faking demise caused by a disease recently done by a famous woman who too by cervical cancer.
“Fight it out first. How? Get any pre-cancerous legion screened first,” he said
Dr Anil Kumar said, “There are oral cancer, breast cancer, liver cancer, cervical cancer and so on. All types of cancer are to be beaten only when you are aware of it.”

Unguarded sex
“Unguarded sex is a precursor to cervical cancer. If there is bleeding after sex, odourful vaginal discharge, bleeding in menopause etc, then there is a strong need for screening, and it must not be put off for another day,” said the civil surgeon.
What triggers mouth cancer?
Chewing khaini, tobacco, a variety of paan masala, etc., are something that triggers mouth cancer.
“It is up to you to choose what mouth you have. Infection-free or cancerous. I ask you to take care of your mouth, and it will take care of it,” the civil surgeon said.
Any ulcer in the oral cavity lasting over 15 days and not responding to treatment calls for screening.
High-fibre food be taken. Wine damages the liver and guts. 9 out of 10 know it but pull mugs of wine. Is this good? he asked.
The civil surgeon tried to drive his point home in homely language, discarding challenging medical jargon.
Lump in breast
“A lump in the breast is to be taken note of. Visit a doctor and tell him that there is a lump in the breast. No girl or woman should feel shy about it. It will help like anything,” he pointed out.
“Moles are on everybody’s body. It is called Til in common parlance. Sometimes, it changes its colour and size. Here is the time to be aware of it,” he said.
There is no expensive way to lead an everyday life like some exercises, avoidance of khaini tobacco and paan masala, wine, intake of high fibrous diet including fruits and significant of all, if there is any abnormality, visiting a doctor and doing what he says.
Air pollution
Air pollution is a factor behind lung cancer. One is expected to be careful of air pollution. Smoke and smog are both no good for the lungs, Dr Anil Kumar said.
Cancer winners
Daltonganj town has a good number of cancer winners. There is Eqbal Khan, who has defeated blood cancer. There is Deepak Kumar, who has succeeded in containing his pancreatic cancer. One young girl (name withheld) is coming out of the trauma of breast cancer here. The list of the cancer winners is long but not long enough to overtake the list of the afflicted people.
