Dhanbad, Sept 7: Despite improvement in ranking and developed infrastructure, the students who qualified under the all-India quota look reluctant to take admission to medical colleges of Jharkhand.

14 students were admitted after first counselling

In the first counselling (August 27 to August 31) only 14 students out of 75 reserved seats under the all-India quota have been admitted to five medical colleges of Jharkhand so far.

The authorities of all five medical colleges, MGMMCH Jamshedpur, SNMMCH Dhanbad, PJMCH Dumka, SBMCH Hazaribagh and MMCH Palamu expressed hope that the remaining 61 seats under the all-India quota are expected to be filled up in the second counselling (September 13 to 20)

RIMS Ranchi is the lone autonomous medical institution of Jharkhand where all proceeding goes separately.

Health director brushes aside the theory

However, the director, medical education wing of the state health department, Dr SK Singh on Saturday, when contacted, brushed aside the theory that students under the all-India quota are reluctant to be admitted to medical colleges of Jharkhand.

“Students of all India quota first want to take admission in their own state’s medical colleges and wait for AIIMS. So, they do not rush admission in the first counselling.  Generally, in second counselling they take admission as in 3rd round, there will be no option for them,” said director Dr Singh.

 Highest in SNMMCH Dhanbad

Among 14 students of all India quota, who have been admitted to Jharkhand medical colleges, are highest five at SNMMCH Dhanbad followed by three each at PJMCH Dumka, SBMCH Hazaribagh and   MMCH Palamu.

Interestingly, not a single student of the all-India quota has opted for MGMMCH Jamshedpur which is considered number 1 rank among the five medical colleges.

MGMMCH Jamshedpur principal Dr Ravindra Kumar, when contacted, admitted that no student turned up for admission in the first round of counselling on reserved 15 seats of all India quota. The principal expressed hope that all seats will be filled up in the 2nd round.

SNMMCH Dhanbad admission in-charge Dr Ganesh Kumar said that since his institution is more than 50 years old and has smooth rail connectivity, students of other states prefer it most.

“Students of south Indian states hardly come here but students of Hindi belt states find SNMMCH congenial due to Hindi language,” said Dr Ganesh Kumar.

In the 2023 session, all 500 MBBS seats in five medical colleges including 415 state quotas, 75 all-India quotas and 10 central government nominees were filled for the first time.
