Daltonganj, January 6: Amid a backdrop of persistent controversies, Nilamber Pitamber University (NPU) Vice-Chancellor Dr Dinesh Kumar Singh on Tuesday presented his roadmap for the all-round development of the university, covering students, teachers and non-teaching staff, at his first press conference of the New Year.

Departing from past practice, the VC invited journalists to raise questions first, remarking that “hardly a day passes without controversy being thrust upon me.” He said he does not court controversy, but added that his work often draws criticism.
“It gives me more impetus to work harder,” he said.

Responding to a question on whether controversies follow him by habit, Dr Singh said, “It is neither my habit nor my hobby. I am dragged into it. My achievements bring more criticism.”

Attendance Rule for Professional Courses

Outlining the academic roadmap, the VC said strict norms would be enforced for professional courses, where absenteeism is reportedly around 40 per cent.
He announced that students with less than 70 per cent attendance will not be allowed to fill examination forms.

However, he clarified that such a rule cannot be strictly imposed on general studies courses due to administrative and systemic constraints, remarking candidly, “Bahut majboori hai.”

Placement Cell, Industry Linkages

Dr Singh informed that a placement cell is being set up, with Gaurav Srivastav heading it for the time being. He said a Jharkhand-based company has expressed willingness to recruit students from the university.

PhD Entrance Issue Remains Unresolved

On the issue of candidates who cleared the PhD entrance test but are awaiting enrolment, the VC said the university has not yet taken a final decision, as opinions within the administration remain divided.

During the discussion, Dean of Student Welfare Dr S.K. Pandey termed the issue time-barred, a view contested by mediapersons who argued that candidates should not suffer due to administrative delays. The VC responded diplomatically, suggesting that a solution may emerge unexpectedly and even sought media opinion, during which concerns were raised about the sanctity of the PhD entrance process.

Exams, Research Push

The VC said the university has set a target of conducting 100 examinations by the end of March to reduce session delays.

Registrar Dr Nafis Ahmad informed that 140 research seats are available for candidates who have cleared NET and GATE, to which the VC said the response would be reviewed.

Dr Pandey added that around a dozen scholars have been awarded PhD degrees, calling it a record achievement in the last five years.

Concluding the press conference, the VC said those attempting reforms often face resistance, adding that he accepts criticism as part of the process.
