Dubai, March 5: Australian cricket star Steve Smith, a two-time World Cup winner, has announced his retirement from one-day internationals (ODIs). His decision comes after leading Australia to a semi-final exit in the Champions Trophy.
While stepping away from ODIs, Smith emphasized his commitment to Test and T20 cricket, stating that he is eager for the upcoming World Test Championship Final, the West Indies tour, and the home series against England.
“It has been a great ride and I have loved every minute of it. There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight along with the many fantastic team-mates who shared the journey,” Smith said in a statement to Cricket Australia.

Explaining his decision, Smith highlighted the importance of preparing the next generation for the 2027 World Cup, saying, “Now is a great opportunity for people to start preparing for the 2027 World Cup so it feels like the right time to make way.”
Smith leaves behind an impressive ODI legacy, having played 170 matches and amassed 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28, including 12 centuries and 35 half-centuries. Additionally, he contributed with the ball, taking 28 wickets.
A key figure in Australia’s triumphant World Cup campaigns in 2015 and 2023, Smith’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter in his white-ball career.
