Lahore, June 30: Former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood has been appointed as the acting head coach of the national men’s red-ball team and will serve in the role until his contract ends in April 2025.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed the appointment on Monday, following the departure of head coaches Jason Gillespie (Tests) and Gary Kirsten (limited-overs formats).

Mahmood, who signed a two-year deal with the PCB in April 2023 as an assistant coach across all formats, now steps into the lead role for Test cricket.

The board highlighted his strong coaching background, particularly in the English county circuit, where he played a key role in Surrey’s County Championship victories.
With extensive international experience and a solid track record, Mahmood is seen as a steady hand to guide Pakistan’s red-ball team forward. The 50-year-old represented Pakistan in 21 Tests and 143 ODIs between 1996 and 2007.
