SUBHASH MISHRA

Dhanbad, January 12: Manoj Kumar Agrawal, Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), on Sunday felicitated Dhanbad Sadar Hospital Deputy Superintendent and gynaecologist Dr Sanjiv Kumar for successfully conducting a series of rare and critical surgeries on female patients.

The felicitation took place during the Anand Mela programme organised by BCCL Diksha Mahila Mandal (BCCL Officers’ Wives Association) at the Nehru Sports Complex, Koylanagar.

CMD Praises Service to Poor Women

CMD Manoj Kumar Agrawal lauded Dr Sanjiv Kumar’s dedicated services, especially his contribution in treating poor and critically ill women patients and helping them recover from serious medical conditions.

Senior Officials and Public Representatives Present

BCCL Director (Personnel) Murli Krishna Ramaiah, Nirsa MLA Arup Chatterjee, and Archna Agrawal, wife of the BCCL CMD, were also present on the occasion.

This is the first time that a CMD of BCCL has felicitated a doctor from Dhanbad Sadar Hospital for outstanding medical service. Despite BCCL running its own chain of hospitals, no doctor from those institutions has received this honour so far.

17 Rare Surgeries in Four Months

According to official records, Dr Sanjiv Kumar, who is the Deputy Superintendent of Dhanbad Sadar Hospital, has conducted 17 rare and critical surgeries on female patients in the last four months.

Earlier, on December 24, 2025, Jharkhand Health Minister Dr Irfan Ansari had also appreciated Dr Sanjiv Kumar’s work.

Distinguished Career in Public Health

Despite being a gynaecologist, Dr Sanjiv Kumar has also made a mark in public health administration. He served as a Surveillance Medical Officer with the World Health Organisation (WHO) from 2002 to 2008.

He was later appointed as Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) Officer of Dhanbad district, where he played a key role in streamlining immunisation and other health programmes.

Journey as Hospital Administrator

Impressed by his performance, the then Governor Ramesh Bais appointed him as the first Deputy Superintendent of Dhanbad Sadar Hospital in 2022. He was later transferred to Sahibganj Sadar Hospital, where his surgical work significantly improved health services.

In May 2025, Dr Sanjiv Kumar was again given charge as Deputy Superintendent of Dhanbad Sadar Hospital.

Despite his administrative responsibilities, Dr Sanjiv Kumar continues to conduct critical surgeries and attend the Outpatient Department (OPD) daily. Civil Surgeon Dr Alok Vishwakarma also regularly attends OPD services.
