Dhanbad, Oct 21: In a thrilling conclusion to the Chaibasa FIDE Rating Chess Tournament, Bihar’s Shubham Kumar clinched the championship title, while Jharkhand’s Adhiraj Mitra secured the second position.

The tournament, which wrapped up at the St. Xavier Welfare Centre on Sunday evening, saw Shubham achieving the highest score of 8 points in nine rounds. In a decisive final round, Shubham defeated Arkoprobha Banik from West Bengal, who had 6.5 points, to secure his victory.

Adhiraj Mitra, with 7.5 points, earned the runner-up spot after defeating Rupesh Ramchandra of Bihar, who also had 6.5 points in the final round.

Bengal’s defending champion, Anurag Jaiswal, also scored 7.5 points but was placed third due to lower progressive points compared to Adhiraj. In the final round, Jaiswal overcame Shankhdeep Maity from Bengal, who ended the tournament with 6.5 points.

Gagan Sahu from Chhattisgarh and Avijit Das from Bengal both earned 7 points, securing the 4th and 5th positions, respectively. In their final match, the two players faced off and settled for a draw. The tournament witnessed impressive performances from participants across states.

Under-7 category

Basant Khandelwal, secretary of the host organization, the West Singhbhum District Chess Association, announced the winners in various categories.

In the girls under-7 category, Swastika Prajapati, T Niharika, and Shreya Gautam claimed the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd positions, respectively.

In the boys under-7, Dhairya Agrawal, Suman Kashyap, and Ved Ahuja took the top three spots.

Under-9 category

In the girls under-9 category, Naira Aditya and Soujanya Subhashni earned the 1st and 2nd positions respectively, while in the boys category, Rudranil Ray, Wridhiman Dutta, and Wrishi Raj secured the top three places respectively.

Special categories

Ritik Kumar was declared the best unrated player of the tournament, with Rahul Das securing the second-best unrated player title.

Navnil Das received the trophy for the best handicapped player, while Chandrashekhar Rawat and Narendra Nath Pandey emerged as the 1st and 2nd place winners in the veteran category respectively.

Additionally, Rajesh Kumar and Aniket Verma were named the best participants from the host district.

Prize distribution and closing ceremony

International Arbiter Jayant Bhuyan highlighted that 216 players participated in the tournament, with no formal protests lodged throughout the competition. The closing ceremony was graced by Deputy Commissioner Kuldeep Choudhary and DDC Sandeep Kumar Meena, who served as the chief guest and guest of honour, respectively. They distributed prizes to the winners and lauded Basant Khandelwal for organizing a successful event.

Also present at the ceremony were Deputy Collector Arnav Mishra, WSDCA President Mukund Rungta, and other notable figures including Nitin Prakash, Sohan Lal Mudra, and Jahagir Alam.
