Ranchi, May 16: BJP state president and Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi has sharply criticised the Hemant Soren-led Jharkhand government for its response to a recent incident in Bokaro district, where a man accused of molestation died following a mob assault.

Marandi alleged that the state administration displayed greater concern for the deceased accused’s family than for the tribal woman who reported the molestation attempt. He questioned whether tribal women have become “second-class citizens” in Jharkhand under the current governance.

Incident Overview

On May 8, Abdul Kalam, a 25-year-old construction worker, was allegedly assaulted by villagers in Paik Narayanpur, Bokaro, after being accused of attempting to molest a tribal woman. Reports indicate that Kalam was tied to a tree and beaten by a group of villagers. He was later taken to Bokaro Thermal Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Police have arrested two individuals in connection with the incident and are continuing their investigation.

Political Reactions

Marandi criticised the state government’s decision to provide ₹4 lakh in compensation, ₹1 lakh in relief, and a job in the health department to Kalam’s family. He argued that this response overlooks the plight of the tribal woman involved and reflects a bias influenced by vote-bank politics.

He also took aim at Congress MLA Dr. Irfan Ansari for framing the incident as a case of “mob lynching,” suggesting that such narratives divert attention from the original allegations and the victim’s experience.

Government’s Stance

The Jharkhand government has not yet issued a detailed statement regarding the compensation decision. However, officials have indicated that the compensation aligns with protocols for victims of mob violence. The administration has also stated that all procedures are being followed under the guidance of the police headquarters.

Ongoing Investigation

Bokaro Superintendent of Police Manoj Swargiary confirmed the arrests and stated that the investigation is ongoing. Authorities are reviewing video evidence of the incident to identify additional suspects. The police have assured that all actions are being taken by legal procedures.

The incident has sparked a political debate in Jharkhand, highlighting tensions between ensuring justice for victims and addressing concerns over communal narratives. As investigations continue, the state’s approach to handling such sensitive cases remains under scrutiny.
