New Delhi, August 1: In a major outbreak of measles in Jharkhand, four children have died of measles in the last three months while more than 700 were affected by the disease across the State.

According to sources in the Union Health Ministry, two deaths have been confirmed due to measles in Chandankiyari of Bokaro district (Manav Kumar, Prahlad Kumar) and one in Chas (Namita Kumari). Apart from this, one child has died due to measles in the Tonto block of West Singhbhum (Sidui Laguri). Both the children who died in the Chandankiyari block of Bokaro district are from Gosaindhih village, while one child is from Rani Chirsa village.

The child who died of measles in the Tonto block of West Singhbhum district is from Chalpagada village. The age of children dying from measles is between one to five years.

Jharkhand is the worst hit

According to sources, Jharkhand is the worst hit as only 223 outbreaks have been found in the entire country in the year 2024.

Ironically, the central government has not received any information about children dying from measles in the country from any other state, except Jharkhand.

In the case of a measles outbreak, even in the year 2022, the situation in Jharkhand was the worst in comparison to other states.

250 cases of measles in Bokaro, 225 in W Singhbhum  

Whereas 250 cases of measles outbreak have been found in Bokaro district of Jharkhand and 225 cases of outbreak have been found in West Singhbhum.

According to sources in the Union Health Ministry, at present, cases of measles outbreak have been found in five districts of Jharkhand.

These districts include Palamu, Deoghar, East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum and Bokaro.

Cases of measles outbreaks have been found in 10 blocks of these five districts. A measles outbreak has been found in 10 blocks of these five districts.

225 cases of measles in East Singhbhum

225 cases of measles outbreak have been found in five blocks of East Singhbhum (Tonto, Khuntapani, Goyalkera, Chakradharpur, Manoharpur) and 250 cases of measles outbreak have been found in two blocks of Bokaro district (Chandan Kiari, Chas).

One case of measles outbreak has been found in Chainpur block of Palamu and two cases of measles outbreak have been found in Sarath block of Deoghar.

According to the prescribed criteria, five measles-affected children are considered as one outbreak.

It is noteworthy that even in the year 2022, the outbreak of measles in Jharkhand was the highest compared to the country. In the year 2022, 12 children died of measles across the country. Out of the 12 children who died of measles, nine children were from Jharkhand.
