Jamshedpur, Oct 26: The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Jharkhand held its 2024 Safety Talk, gathering industry leaders and safety experts to address the theme “Equitable and Sustainable Strategies: Building a Safer Future for All.”
Discussions explored the transformative potential of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and digital innovations in safety management, while emphasizing best practices for high-risk activities like working at height and advancing employee well-being through sustainable and mental health initiatives.
Emphasizing commitment in safety management
Manish Sinha, Chief Inspector of Factories highlighted the critical role of commitment and targeted action in safety management, stressing that up to 60% of accidents are preventable through robust SOPs, training, and regular machine maintenance.
Sharing Tata Steel’s track record of zero fatal accidents since its acquisition, he attributed this to the company’s strong safety culture and urged leaders to champion safer, more modern workplaces across industrial zones.
The importance of understanding human behavior
Neeraj Sinha, Convenor of the CII Jharkhand Safety Panel & Chief Safety Officer at Tata Steel Ltd, emphasized the necessity of understanding human behaviour to develop effective safety practices, remarking, “Safety is a need for all.”

He advocated for an integrated approach that begins with safety education at home and school, extending to the workplace. He acknowledged that while zero accidents remain an ambitious goal, safety initiatives must encompass wellness programs with a strong focus on mental health. Sinha encouraged stakeholders to actively promote safety and well-being, recognizing that a truly safe environment requires holistic development.
Addressing road safety concerns
The event commenced with a welcome address from Tapas Sahu, Past Chairman of CII Jharkhand State Council and Managing Director & CEO of Highco Engineers Pvt Ltd. He expressed concern over India’s high incidence of road accidents, attributing 90% of cases to human error.
Sahu introduced his “Safety Trifecta” approach—“Checklists, Champions, and Company Visits”—as a cornerstone for effective safety management, underscoring the impact of technological advancements in urban safety measures.
Safety in MSMEs and vehicles
Suvendra Kumar Behera, Chairman of CII Eastern Region and Vice Chairman & Managing Director of RSB Transmissions (I) Ltd, called attention to MSME safety as a means of protecting workers, beyond mere compliance.
He highlighted the role of the Indian automotive industry in enhancing vehicle safety through additional features, and emphasized that the responsibility of safety extends to all, regardless of position. Noting that 70% of road accidents involve young individuals, Behera urged a collective embrace of safety, describing it as a shared duty.
The CII Jharkhand Safety Talk 2024 succeeded in sparking vital conversations around safety, encouraging industry-wide collaboration towards a future of equitable and sustainable safety practices.
