Kolkata, March 7: Coal India Limited (CIL), under the Ministry of Coal, took a major step toward women’s empowerment and socio-economic development by organizing a day-long Kantha Fair at its headquarters, Coal Bhawan, New Town. The event highlighted the intricate embroidery work of 200-250 women artisans from West Bengal, beneficiaries of the Kantha Skill Centre, established under CIL’s CSR initiatives.
As part of its commitment to supporting women, CIL and its subsidiaries celebrated women’s achievements across their offices and operational areas. Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL), Ranchi, Jharkhand, led the efforts by hosting a mega event featuring tribal art, women-led businesses, and technical skill demonstrations. Other subsidiaries, including BCCL, CMPDIL, ECL, NCL, SECL, MCL, and WCL, also organized programs under the theme of Women Empowerment.
Leadership Participation and Key Highlights
The event featured Rupinder Brar, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Coal, and Vinay Ranjan, Director (P&IR), CIL, who joined virtually.
Speaking on the occasion, Brar emphasized that the initiative reflects CIL’s commitment to fostering sustainable livelihoods. She stated, “CIL and its subsidiaries are dedicated to implementing impactful programs across the country, transforming lives and communities. We are empowering women through skill development, entrepreneurship, and social initiatives under CSR projects.”

Echoing this sentiment, Ranjan remarked, “We take pride in promoting self-reliance among women by empowering them. CIL and its subsidiaries are committed to uplifting marginalized communities and creating opportunities for women in economic and social spheres. Through such initiatives, we not only contribute to the nation’s progress but also preserve its rich artistic heritage.”
Event Inauguration and Felicitation
The Kantha Fair was jointly inaugurated by Vinay Ranjan, Director (P&IR), CIL, Mukesh Agrawal, Director (Finance), CIL, and Brajesh Kumar Tripathy, Chief Vigilance Officer, CIL, in the presence of women artisans.
During the event, three women artisans were felicitated for their outstanding craftsmanship. Several senior officials, including OP Mishra, Executive Director (CD), Renu Chaturvedi, GM (CSR), CIL, and other dignitaries, attended the function at CIL Headquarters, Kolkata.
