New Delhi, June 21: In a major development in the Delhi liquor scam case, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will not be able to come out of jail even after being granted bail by the lower court. The Delhi High Court has stayed his bail today, Friday. It is reported that the High Court has stayed the bail until the hearing of the case.
Notably, Kejriwal was granted bail by the lower court namely Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court yesterday, Thursday. Opposing this, the ED approached the Delhi High Court.
The High Court refused to accept the argument made by Kejriwal’s lawyer, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, which stated that there was no need for an urgent hearing on the petition.
ED challenged Kejriwal’s bail order in Delhi HC
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) challenged Arvind Kejriwal’s bail order in the Delhi High Court, which was heard by the vacation bench of Justices Sudhir Kumar Jain and Ravinder Dudeja.
The ED’s lawyer argued that they were not given sufficient time to argue the case in the lower court. ASG Raju informed the High Court that they were not given time to file written submissions, which he stated was completely unfair.
Citing Section 45 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), ASG Raju argued that the ED’s case was very strong. He also opposed the presence of Singhvi.
ED had requested urgent hearing in Delhi HC today itself
The ED stated in its Special Leave Petition (SLP) that releasing Kejriwal at a crucial stage of the investigation would impact the probe, given his important position as Chief Minister.
Earlier today, the ED had requested the High Court for an expedited hearing. ASG Raju and lawyer Zoheb Hussain represented the ED in the High Court. On behalf of Kejriwal, Abhishek Manu Singhvi appeared via video conferencing.
