Kolkata, Sept 8: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) launched extensive raids across West Bengal, including multiple locations in Kolkata, on Monday as part of its probe into a major sand smuggling operation.
Central security forces accompanied ED officials during the coordinated searches, which spanned areas such as Behala, Regent Park, Bidhannagar, and Kalyani.
At the centre of the investigation is Sheikh Jahirul, a prominent figure in the alleged racket based in Jhargram district. ED teams targeted his expansive residence near the Subarnarekha River in Gopiballavpur, as well as his office and vehicles.

Officials allege that Jahirul, who formerly worked as a village police officer, is deeply involved in illegal sand extraction and trade, owning several sand mines and accumulating significant wealth through these activities.
Simultaneous searches were also conducted at the properties and offices of other sand mine operators in Beliaberia and Jamboni blocks of Jhargram.
Investigators are meticulously examining financial records, business documents, and assets to trace the flow of money.
Authorities suspect that large sums generated from the illicit sand trade were funneled into insurance companies and other business ventures.
