Dhanbad, Dec 8: “Exploration today is not merely a technical challenge but a strategic imperative that demands innovation, responsibility, and long-term vision,” said Om Prakash Sinha, ONGC Director (Exploration), while addressing the national seminar Fueling the Future: Navigating the Global Energy Transition at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.
The seminar, organised by the Department of Petroleum Engineering at the Penman Auditorium, highlighted the central role of sustainable and technology-enabled exploration in safeguarding India’s energy security during the global shift toward cleaner fuels.

IIT (ISM) Highlights Century-Long Energy Leadership, Focus on New Domains
Presiding over the function, IIT (ISM) Chairman Prof. Prem Vrat emphasised the institute’s century-long legacy in energy education and its expanding thrust on new areas such as solar energy.

Earlier, welcoming delegates, IIT (ISM) Director and symposium patron Prof. Sukumar Mishra underlined the need for deeper academia–industry partnerships.
He noted that emerging technologies—including carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), unconventional energy resources, and digital reservoir engineering solutions—will significantly shape India’s response to the global low-carbon transition.
Experts Discuss Reservoir Management, Energy Transition and Green Innovations
In the subsequent technical sessions, experts from Penn State University, ONGC, GAIL, CSIR-IIP and other leading institutions presented insights on advanced reservoir management, energy transition strategies and innovations in green energy.
A technical workshop on Enhanced Coal Bed Methane (ECBM) offered participants hands-on exposure to new techniques aimed at unlocking cleaner unconventional gas resources.

Panel Calls for Balanced Roadmap for India’s Energy Future
The symposium concluded with a panel discussion involving senior professionals, policymakers and academic leaders.
The panel examined the sector’s major challenges and discussed a strategic roadmap to balance India’s rising energy needs with its environmental commitments, reinforcing the need for collaborative efforts and sustained innovation in the energy sector.
