Ranchi, July 15: Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar on Wednesday called on Birla Institute of Technology (BIT) Mesra to develop technology-driven solutions to Jharkhand’s development challenges, saying the institute should harness its scientific expertise to address issues in sectors such as mining, energy, agriculture, environmental conservation and sustainable development.
Addressing the Foundation Day celebrations of BIT Mesra, the Governor said Jharkhand’s abundant natural and mineral resources offer immense opportunities for research and innovation. He urged the institute to play a leading role in finding practical solutions to local problems while contributing to the state’s overall development.
Gangwar said technical institutions must move beyond their traditional role of imparting education and emerge as centres of innovation, research, entrepreneurship and industry collaboration.
He said BIT Mesra, with its seven-decade legacy in technical education, is well placed to develop technologies that address real-world challenges and support inclusive growth in Jharkhand.

‘Education should create job creators’
Highlighting the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Governor said higher education institutions should promote multidisciplinary learning, innovation and skill development.
He stressed that the objective of education should extend beyond preparing students for employment and instead encourage them to become entrepreneurs and job creators.
Role in Viksit Bharat
Gangwar said flagship initiatives such as Viksit Bharat 2047, Atmanirbhar Bharat, Startup India, Digital India, Make in India and the India AI Mission are transforming India’s technological landscape.
He said institutions like BIT Mesra have a crucial role in ensuring that Indian youth become creators and global leaders in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, robotics, quantum computing, semiconductors, cybersecurity and green energy.
Calls for socially responsible engineers
The Governor also urged students to combine technical excellence with ethics, discipline, leadership and social responsibility.
He said the true measure of an engineer lies not only in professional competence but also in using technology for the welfare of society and nation-building.
Expressing confidence in the institute’s future, Gangwar said BIT Mesra would continue to set new benchmarks in research, innovation and academic excellence while making a significant contribution to the vision of a developed and self-reliant India.
