IIT ISM Dhanbad director elevated to IEEE Fellow rank

Dhanbad, Dec 5: Prof. Sukumar Mishra, the director of IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad, has been elevated to the prestigious rank of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Fellow for his significant contributions to Microgrid Control and Smart Charging Technologies.

This honour, which takes effect from January 1, 2025, is one of the highest recognitions in the field of electrical and electronic engineering.

IEEE Fellow recognition and evaluation process

The IEEE Fellow rank is awarded to a select group of individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the profession. Each year, the IEEE Fellow Committee evaluates candidates, with less than 0.1% of voting members being chosen for this distinction.

Prof. Mishra will receive an IEEE Fellow certificate and a 10K Gold Fellow pin as part of the recognition for his elevation to the highest grade of IEEE membership.

Additional honours and contributions to solar photovoltaic systems

Alongside this prestigious elevation, Prof. Mishra was recently honoured with the Hingorani Award 2024 by the Bangalore Chapter of the IEEE Power and Energy Society. This award recognizes his exceptional contributions to advancing Solar Photovoltaic Systems, a field in which his innovative work continues to make significant strides.

Prof. Mishra’s groundbreaking research in power grid challenges

Prof. Mishra’s research has been instrumental in addressing the dynamic challenges of modern power grids. His work on advanced control methods for designing grid-forming inverters plays a critical role in improving the stability and efficiency of power systems.

A senior faculty member of IIT ISM said this research supports the development of distributed generation systems that integrate renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic arrays, fuel cells, wind turbines, and hydroelectric systems into existing power infrastructures.
