On Thursday, the UGC, introduced draft regulations and sought public feedback.

Key reforms in the draft regulations include biannual admissions, the option for multiple entries and exits, eligibility for admission to any UG or PG program regardless of the discipline chosen in class 12, and the requirement for students to earn at least 50% of the total credits in a discipline to obtain an undergraduate degree with a major in that field.

The UGC intends to separate the eligibility criteria for UG and PG admissions from the strict discipline-specific requirements of school education.

According to the draft regulations, a student is eligible for admission to any UG or PG program if they qualify the national or university-level entrance examination in the respective discipline.

The UGC chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar explained that the new regulations allow for biannual admissions in higher education institutions (HEIs), enabling students to enroll twice a year if the institutions are ready to implement them. The regulations also include provisions for multiple entries and exits, recognition of prior learning, and the flexibility for students to pursue two UG/PG programs at the same time.
