Dhanbad, Sept 30: Prof. Sanjit Kumar Pal, faculty member in the Department of Applied Geophysics at IIT-ISM Dhanbad, has been awarded the National Geoscience Award 2024 by the Ministry of Mines, Government of India.

The award was formally presented by President of India Droupadi Murmu at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi, on September 26, 2025. The honour highlights Prof. Pal’s distinguished academic and research contributions to the field of geophysics and geosciences.
Pioneering Contributions in Geophysics
Prof. Pal has made significant advances in UAV-based and satellite remote sensing, gravity and magnetic methods, electrical resistivity tomography, seismic refraction and cross-hole tomography, ground-penetrating radar, very low frequency electromagnetic (VLF-EM) techniques, and the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in multiparametric geophysical data analysis.

His research has had wide-ranging impact in areas including near-surface and mining geophysics, mineral and groundwater exploration, geotechnical modelling, coal mine fire detection, environmental and engineering geophysics, archaeological investigations, and agricultural studies.
Academic Journey
Prof. Pal completed his B.Sc. in Mathematics from the University of Burdwan, followed by an M.Sc. Tech in Geophysics from Banaras Hindu University, and later earned his Ph.D. in Geophysics from IIT Kharagpur. His career reflects a strong academic foundation coupled with decades of impactful research.
Expressing his gratitude, Prof. Pal said, “Receiving the National Geoscience Award from the President of India is one of the most cherished moments of my professional journey.
