IIT (ISM) Dhanbad welcomes new students; Director calls for innovation

THE JHARKHAND STORY NETWORK

Dhanbad, July 26: The Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad on Sunday welcomed its newly admitted undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students with an inspiring orientation programme, where Director Prof. Sukumar Mishra urged them to become innovators, entrepreneurs and job creators rather than merely seeking employment.

The orientation programme was conducted in two separate sessions at the Penman Auditorium, introducing students to IIT (ISM)’s academic ecosystem, research culture, innovation initiatives and campus life.

Director Calls for Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Addressing the students, Prof. Mishra encouraged them to make the most of IIT (ISM)’s century-old legacy of academic excellence and prepare themselves to address future challenges through innovation, research and interdisciplinary learning.

He highlighted the institute’s expanding focus on emerging sectors such as critical minerals, quantum technology, semiconductors, renewable energy and sustainable mining, noting that these fields will play a vital role in shaping India’s technological future.

Urging students to think beyond conventional career paths, the Director encouraged them to develop critical thinking, teamwork and problem-solving skills while embracing entrepreneurship and startup culture.

“Society expects IIT graduates to create meaningful impact by developing solutions to real-world challenges,” he said.

Students Introduced to Academic Framework

Dean (Academic) Prof. Amit Rai Dixit familiarised the students with IIT (ISM)’s academic structure, curriculum, credit system, evaluation process and interdisciplinary learning opportunities.

He encouraged students to actively engage in academics and research while making full use of the institute’s diverse learning resources.

Focus on Innovation and Industry Collaboration

Dean (Innovation and Corporate Relations) Prof. Alok Kumar Das highlighted IIT (ISM)’s strong innovation ecosystem, industry partnerships and startup support mechanisms.

He encouraged students to leverage these opportunities to transform innovative ideas into practical solutions and successful entrepreneurial ventures.

Emphasis on Student Well-being

Dean (Students’ Welfare) Prof. Sanjoy Kumar Mandal briefed students on the institute’s welfare initiatives, counselling services, hostel facilities and extracurricular activities.

He advised the new entrants to maintain a healthy balance between academic excellence and personal well-being throughout their academic journey.

Interactive Sessions Familiarise Students with Campus Life

The orientation programme was hosted by Prof. Rajni Singh, Dean (International Relations), who welcomed the students and conducted the proceedings.

The event concluded with interactive sessions during which students were introduced to various academic and administrative processes and received clarifications on campus life, institutional facilities and student support services.
