New Delhi, Feb 6: On the issue of 104 Indians being deported from the United States, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar informed the Rajya Sabha that the deportation of illegal immigrants is not a new matter. He stated that the deportation is being carried out in accordance with U.S. regulations. The Minister further clarified that the deportation rule has been in place since 2012.
Jaishankar stated that every country conducts a verification of people’s nationality. He mentioned that India is in continuous contact with the U.S. government regarding the deportation issue, ensuring that no inhumane treatment is faced by Indians.
747 illegal immigrants deported in 2009
In his remarks, the External Affairs Minister also referred to the United Nations treaty on deportation. He stated that this is to support legal migration and discourage illegal migration. Illegal immigrants were stranded in inhumane conditions there. The deportation of illegal immigrants was necessary.
The External Affairs Minister, citing statistics from 2009 to the present, mentioned that illegal immigrants are sent back every year. He informed that in 2009, 747 illegal immigrants were deported. Similarly, hundreds of people have been sent back year after year.

Details on restraint procedures
Jaishankar stated that individuals being deported under the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) implemented since 2012 are restrained during the flight.
The U.S. agency ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) informed India that women and children are not kept restrained during deportation. Restraints are removed when passengers go to the toilet during deportation. The Indians who returned have shared the difficulties they faced during their deportation.
Strict action needed against agents facilitating illegal migration
Jaishankar stated that the Indian government is in constant communication with the U.S. government to ensure that no mistreatment occurs during the deportation of Indians.
The Foreign Minister also mentioned in Parliament that strict action should be taken against agents who send people abroad through illegal means. He emphasized that it is essential for all countries to discourage illegal migration and promote the movement of people through legal channels.
On Wednesday, a U.S. military aircraft carrying 104 illegal Indian immigrants arrived in Amritsar. The deported individuals claimed that their hands and feet were handcuffed during the journey and were only released once they arrived at the Amritsar airport.
