Jamshedpur, June 22: Jamshedpur Police have cracked the Bengal Club Road firing case and arrested a 28-year-old man who allegedly opened fire near a tea stall to terrorise local traders and extort money from them.
The accused, identified as Vipin Shukla, a resident of Tuiladungri in Golmuri, was arrested following a swift investigation. An illegal firearm allegedly used in the crime was also recovered during the operation.
Firing Incident Triggered Panic Among Traders
According to police, the firing incident took place around 10 pm on June 19 near the Abhishek Jubilee Tea Stall on Bengal Club Road, triggering panic among shopkeepers and passers-by.
During the initial investigation, officers recovered a 7.65 mm cartridge case from the spot, indicating the use of a firearm.
Special Team Formed for Investigation
Given the seriousness of the incident, a special investigation and raiding team was constituted under the supervision of the City Superintendent of Police and the Deputy Superintendent of Police (City) on the directions of the Senior Superintendent of Police.
Acting on technical surveillance and human intelligence inputs, police traced the accused and apprehended him near Hathi Ghora Temple while he was heading towards Sitaramdera Bus Stand on June 21.
A country-made pistol along with a magazine was recovered during the arrest.
Subsequently, based on Shukla’s confession, police recovered another weapon concealed in bushes along the banks of the Subarnarekha River.
Accused Confesses to Extortion Motive
During interrogation, the accused reportedly admitted that he had fired shots with the intention of creating fear among shopkeepers and forcing them to pay extortion money.
Police have registered a case under the relevant sections of law and remanded the accused to judicial custody.
Investigators are also examining whether the accused has links with any organised criminal network operating in the city.
The successful crackdown has brought considerable relief to local traders and residents, who had been alarmed by the brazen firing incident in one of Jamshedpur’s busy commercial areas.
