Jamshedpur, November 3: A weekend outing turned tragic when a 22-year-old software engineer from Jamshedpur drowned along with two colleagues at Dubbanshashi Beach near Gokarna in Karnataka on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Shobha Das Devendranath, who worked with Bengaluru-based Alorica India Pvt Ltd. Her death has plunged her family in Jamshedpur into grief.
Shobha was part of a 16-member team from Alorica Ecopace, the company’s facility at Bellandur in Bengaluru. The group had travelled to Gokarna for a weekend outing to celebrate a recent company milestone. They reportedly arrived on Saturday evening and checked into a private resort near the beach.
Waves sweep employees into deeper water
According to preliminary information, five employees entered the sea for a swim on Sunday morning when a sudden surge of powerful waves swept them away from the shoreline and into deeper water.
Beach lifeguards and local fishermen responded to cries for help and launched a rescue operation. Two employees, identified as Nishanth DV and Mohammed Kasim, were rescued alive and taken to the Gokarna Primary Health Centre. Their condition was reported to be stable.
The remaining three employees—Shobha Das Devendranath, 22, team leader Mohammed Akram Ismail Ahmed and Vishwa AK, 24—could not be saved. Their bodies were recovered from the sea after search and rescue efforts.
Police begin investigation
Gokarna police reached the spot and initiated an investigation. The bodies were taken into custody for the necessary legal formalities, and the families of the deceased were informed.
Authorities are examining the circumstances of the incident, including the safety arrangements at the beach and the conditions prevailing when the employees entered the water.
The tragedy has highlighted the risks posed by unpredictable sea conditions, including sudden high waves and strong currents.
What began as a celebratory outing for 16 colleagues ended in the loss of three lives. For Shobha’s family in Jamshedpur, the death of the young software professional has turned an ordinary weekend into an irreparable loss.
