Ranchi, May 31: In a major step towards tackling plastic pollution, the Jharkhand Biodiversity Board (JBB) is set to launch a statewide clean plastic campaign on the eve of World Environment Day (June 5). The campaign will begin in 50 panchayats across five districts — Ranchi, Chatra, Palamu, Giridih, and Hazaribag — in the first phase.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) and Member Secretary of JBB, Sanjeev Kumar, shared that the campaign will be implemented in collaboration with Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) at the grassroots level. It will focus on both urban and rural areas impacted by plastic waste.

Focus on Local Participation and Eco-Sensitive Zones
Sanjeev Kumar stated that the initiative aligns with the 2025 World Environment Day theme — “Eliminating Environmental Pollution.” As part of the campaign, BMCs will identify plastic-prone zones such as public areas, forest patches, and biodiversity-sensitive sites. The collected waste will then be deposited in designated recycling bins to ensure proper disposal.
Kumar emphasized that the campaign is not only a clean-up drive but also an effort to raise awareness about the environmental damage caused by single-use plastics. The goal is to promote plastic recycling, reduce litter, and encourage behavioral change at the community level.
Involving Communities Through Creative Awareness Drives
Kumar highlighted that the success of the campaign depends on active community involvement. Local volunteers, school students, self-help groups, and panchayat members will all be engaged in implementing the drive.

To amplify the message of plastic reduction, educational sessions, street plays, art and quiz competitions, and public awareness rallies will be conducted in various villages. These activities aim to make the campaign both impactful and inclusive.
