Jamshedpur, September 23: Jharkhand is set for another spell of intense monsoon activity as a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal moves towards the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast, with heavy to very heavy rain forecast across several parts of the state over the next three days.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system was centred at 8.30 am on Wednesday near latitude 18.0°N and longitude 84.6°E, around 60 km southeast of Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, 150 km south of Gopalpur and 240 km south-southwest of Puri. Moving westwards at around 5 kmph, it is expected to move west-northwestwards and cross the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur, close to Kalingapatnam, as a deep depression by Wednesday night.
Heavy rain likely across several districts
The system is expected to increase moisture incursion into Jharkhand after crossing the Odisha coast, triggering widespread thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph at isolated places.
On September 23, heavy rain is likely at isolated places across southern, central and northeastern Jharkhand. Ranchi, Khunti, Gumla, Lohardaga, Ramgarh, Hazaribagh, Koderma, Bokaro, Dhanbad, Giridih, Deoghar and Jamtara are among the districts expected to receive significant rainfall.
Very heavy rain forecast on September 24
Weather conditions are likely to intensify on September 24, with heavy to very heavy rain forecast at isolated places over Simdega and West Singhbhum, besides adjoining areas of Ranchi, Gumla and Khunti.
Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are also expected to continue across the state.
On September 25, heavy rain is forecast over northwestern and adjoining north-central Jharkhand, particularly Hazaribagh, Koderma and Giridih. East Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan are also likely to receive heavy showers.
Jamshedpur may see waterlogging, traffic disruption
For Jamshedpur and adjoining areas, the weather system could bring frequent spells of rain, cloudy skies, thunderstorms and gusty winds. Intense showers may temporarily disrupt traffic, reduce visibility and cause waterlogging in vulnerable low-lying areas.
With southern Jharkhand lying relatively close to the system’s projected track over Odisha, unsettled weather is likely to continue through September 25.
Residents have been advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms and lightning, avoid open areas and follow official weather updates.
