Daltonganj, March 30: The discovery of a large snake shed (locally called kechul) at a government-upgraded middle school in Bareysarn village of Latehar district on Monday triggered panic among students and teachers.
An SOS was sent to forester in-charge Paramjeet Tiwary, requesting immediate action to trace the snake after its shed was found on the school premises.
Snake sighting triggers panic in school
“I, along with my team, rushed to the school. It took us a couple of hours to finally track down a live cat snake, also known as the Indian gamma snake. It was rescued and safely released into the forest,” Tiwary said.

Officials said the snake had been present on the school campus for around 8 to 10 days but had not harmed anyone.
Rescue completed, officials clarify risk
The cat snake is mildly venomous and not considered life-threatening, though its bite can cause discomfort. It is usually found in trees and bushes and is often mistaken for the highly venomous Russell’s viper.
The Palamu Tiger Reserve (PTR) has a dedicated team of snake rescuers available free on call across all eight ranges. Officials said snake rescue cases are more frequent in the South division of PTR compared to the North division.
