Ranchi, June 15: Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Monday launched the ‘District Sandbox’ initiative aimed at accelerating the testing, evaluation and scaling of healthcare technologies across Jharkhand.

The initiative was unveiled during the ‘MedTech Innovation Day’ programme organised by Bharatiya Vikas Trust (BVT) in collaboration with the PHIA Foundation at Hotel BNR Chanakya in Ranchi.

Launching the initiative by pressing a remote button, the Chief Minister said innovation, artificial intelligence (AI) and technology-driven solutions would play a decisive role in transforming healthcare delivery in the future.

District Sandbox to Strengthen Health Innovation Ecosystem
The District Sandbox initiative will provide innovators, startups and researchers with an opportunity to test medical technologies in real-world public health settings before large-scale deployment.

The programme aims to strengthen Jharkhand’s health innovation ecosystem and improve healthcare outcomes, particularly for rural, tribal and marginalised communities.
“I congratulate Bharatiya Vikas Trust, PHIA Foundation and all their partners for bringing this initiative to Jharkhand and creating a platform that promotes collaboration and innovation,” Chief Minister Hemant Soren said.
“Jharkhand offers immense potential for innovators to develop practical solutions suited to local needs and conditions. Such innovations can bring positive changes in people’s lives, especially in tribal and rural communities,” he added.

AI and Technology Will Shape Future Healthcare
Highlighting the growing role of AI, bio-engineering and real-time data in healthcare, the Chief Minister said technology would be central to strengthening healthcare services in remote areas.
“The health sector is facing challenges across the world. In a state like Jharkhand, with its unique geographical and social landscape, the role of technology and innovation becomes even more important. Delivering better healthcare services to remote and tribal areas remains a priority for the government,” Soren said.
He assured startups and researchers of all possible support from the state government to take innovative healthcare solutions to the grassroots level.
The Chief Minister also inspected a film-less portable digital X-ray machine developed by alumni of IIT Dhanbad, one of the innovations showcased during the event.
Government Plans 745 ‘Abua Medical Stores’
Health Minister Dr Irfan Ansari said the healthcare sector has witnessed significant growth under the present government, pointing to the increase in medical colleges, MBBS seats, postgraduate seats and recruitment of doctors.
He said efforts were underway to improve the availability of specialist doctors in rural areas through a new healthcare model.
The minister also highlighted the government’s plan to open 745 ‘Abua Medical Stores’ across Jharkhand to improve access to affordable medicines.
“Health and education should remain our highest priorities. We are committed to promoting innovation and technology in the healthcare sector,” Dr Ansari said.
He also referred to the growing role of AI-based healthcare services and the proposed AI conference aimed at strengthening the state’s healthcare ecosystem.
Experts Discuss Scaling Healthcare Innovations
The event featured two panel discussions focusing on the development of MedTech solutions for the public health system and strategies to accelerate the adoption and scaling of healthcare innovations through collaboration among government agencies, innovators, healthcare institutions and development partners.
PHIA Foundation Executive Director Johnson Topno said the District Sandbox would provide a vital platform for testing and refining solutions aligned with Jharkhand’s healthcare priorities.
“The District Sandbox offers an important opportunity to test and refine solutions to challenges related to Jharkhand’s health priorities by bringing together the government, innovators, researchers and communities. We hope this initiative will accelerate the adoption of innovations capable of bringing positive changes in people’s lives on a large scale,” Topno said.
According to the organisers, the District Sandbox is a key component of the broader innovation ecosystem being developed by BVT and the PHIA Foundation and will help promising healthcare technologies move from pilot testing to large-scale implementation.
