PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, August 16: In a shocking development on Independence Day, Jharkhand education minister Ramdas Soren passed away late on Friday night.

The news of his death was confirmed through his official Twitter account at around 10:45 pm.

A heartfelt message, accompanied by his photograph, was shared on the account stating that his son had expressed deep grief while informing that Ramdas Soren is no longer among us.

The sudden announcement has left the state’s political circles and his supporters in mourning.

Ramdas Soren, a senior leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), played a crucial role in state politics and was regarded as one of the prominent tribal leaders in the current government.

As education minister, he was actively involved in shaping policies aimed at improving literacy, school infrastructure, and access to education in remote areas of Jharkhand.

Born in a family with strong political roots, Soren carried forward the legacy of the JMM, a party founded by Shibu Soren and now led by Hemant Soren.

Known for his simplicity, connect with grassroots communities, and dedication towards upliftment of marginalized groups, his passing away is seen as a huge loss to the tribal movement and to Jharkhand’s education sector.

Condolences have started pouring in from across the state and nation.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren, cabinet colleagues, opposition leaders, and people from all walks of life are paying tribute to the late minister.

Social media has also been flooded with messages of grief, remembering him as a leader who always put the interests of Jharkhand’s people above everything else.

Further details about the funeral is awaited.

Ramdas Soren, suffered a stroke at his residence in Ghorabandha, Jamshedpur, on August 2.

He was immediately rushed to a local hospital before being shifted to New Delhi’s Apollo Hospital via an air ambulance for advanced medical care.

Since then, Soren had been under continuous treatment at Apollo, where a team of specialists monitored his condition. Despite all medical efforts, his health remained critical in recent days.

Soren, a senior leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), represented the Ghatshila constituency in the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly.

His sudden illness and subsequent passing have left a void in the political and social fabric of Jharkhand, especially among the tribal community he championed.
