THE JHARKHAND STORY DESK

Ranchi, July 30: The Jharkhand High Court on Wednesday heard a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking action against encroachments around reservoirs.

Taking the matter seriously, a division bench headed by the Chief Justice directed the Secretary of the Urban Development Department, the Secretary of the Water Resources Department, the Ranchi Deputy Commissioner, and the Ranchi Municipal Corporation Administrator to appear in person before the court on Thursday.

The High Court also instructed the state government and the municipal corporation to submit detailed reports on the action taken so far in compliance with the court’s earlier order dated April 18, 2023.

The PIL was filed to protect Ranchi’s Bada Talab and other water bodies in the district from encroachment.

It alleges that hundreds of acres of land belonging to Bada Talab, Kanke Dam, and Dhurwa Dam have been illegally occupied, with multi-storey buildings being constructed in these areas.

According to the petition, this threatens the natural flow and existence of these reservoirs, potentially leading to severe water shortages and environmental imbalance in the future if urgent measures are not taken.
