Daltonganj, January 25: A two-day workshop on improving and strengthening the research ecosystem in higher education institutions in Jharkhand will be held on the DSPMU Ranchi campus beginning February 1.

A coordination committee has been formed under the chairmanship of Sayyad Riyaz Ahemad, IAS, undersecretary, department of Higher and Technical Education, to network the 2-day workshop.

The workshop is to be inaugurated by Chief Minister Hemant Soren on February 1.

The workshop has invited state and private universities, constituent colleges, affiliated colleges, BIT, NIT, CUJ, BAU, polytechnic colleges etc.

There is a tentative list of industrial houses like SAIL Bokaro, Tata Steel Limited, Jamshedpur, Tata Power Ltd, and the Industry Partner of IIT Madras (Tunga Aerospace Industries) for panel discussions.

Vice-chancellor of the DSPMU Ranchi, Dr Tapan Kumar Shandilya, said, “It’s an honour and privilege to have such an august workshop on research ecosystem in higher education institutions in Jharkhand.”

“We will do our best for it, and we strongly believe this workshop benefits and helps us build environs for research and innovation,” said Shandaliya.

The higher education and technical department has asked the DSPMU Ranchi to spend money on this workshop. Still, where it finds chicken neck problems with money, the department is there to assist this university with this mega workshop financially.

There are many topics for discussion, and what is conspicuous is that people’s resistance to research only sometimes comes in the way. Still, a government department, too, throws a spanner to research and development.

There can’t be a better example of hindrance coming from the government department than this, where a model degree college in Chainpur police station limits in Palamu under the Nilamber Pitamber University Daltonganj has been languishing for over two years because of the forest department, which has declined to give NoC for constructing the boundary wall of this college.

Higher education, especially MA, MSc, and MCom, has lost its relevance here in Jharkhand because of the need for more standardisation in teaching. Labs remain closed for years. Libraries stink as there is no significant footfall of the readers.

Among the varied discussion topics is one, ‘Traditional Knowledge System in Higher Education System’, which looks not bizarre but more down to earth.

Most other topics will reverberate the campus with a high tone of intellectualism, leaving a commoner at his wit’s end to discover how it will improve higher education.
