SUBHASH MISHRA

Dhanbad, Oct 10: Medicos across Jharkhand have decided to wear black badges during their clinical duties to protest the arrest of a Madhya Pradesh paediatrician in connection with the toxic cough syrup case. The move comes on the directive of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) national body.

Dr. D. Tiwari, IMA National Vice-President (Headquarters, New Delhi) and President of IMA Deoghar chapter, stated that the national office has written to all state chapters regarding the protest. “The protest will continue until the doctor is released from jail and the unjust case is withdrawn,” he said.

IMA Condemns Arrest

IMA National President Dr. Dilip Bhanushali and Secretary General Sarbari Dutta have strongly condemned the arrest, calling it a serious matter. They urged medicos to stage a symbolic protest against the criminalization of ethical medical practice.

Dr. Tiwari highlighted that the arrest reflects a misunderstanding of medical responsibilities. “Doctors prescribe approved medications in good faith, following regulatory clearances and standard protocols. Holding a prescribing doctor accountable for a manufacturing lapse—entirely outside their clinical responsibility—sets a dangerous precedent and deeply undermines the morale of the medical fraternity,” the IMA leaders stated in their appeal.
