Jamshedpur, May 31: On World No Tobacco Day today, Brahmanand Narayana Hospital (BNH) in Jamshedpur is urging heightened awareness about the dangers of tobacco consumption.

Cancer specialists urge public education and tobacco cessation efforts

Dr. Amit Kumar, senior cancer specialist, and Dr. Ashish Kumar, senior cancer surgeon, emphasized the critical importance of educating the public and encouraging individuals to quit tobacco use.

The doctors stress the significance of early detection, highlighting how many patients overlook symptoms of oral cancer in its initial stages, leading to delayed treatment.

They emphasize the need for proactive measures to address this issue, as delayed intervention often necessitates more invasive treatments.

Dr. Amit and Dr. Ashish advocate for comprehensive anti-tobacco programs to be integrated into school and college curricula.

They underscore the importance of empowering children and youth to understand the risks associated with tobacco use.

BNH urges collective action to combat oral cancer

Furthermore, the doctors emphasize the crucial role of parents and society in safeguarding children from tobacco use by discouraging consumption and promoting healthy habits from an early age.

They believe that concerted efforts in education, awareness, and community support are essential to protect the health and future of children.

Tobacco use poses serious health risks, including lung damage, heart disease, respiratory ailments, and an increased risk of cancer.

India faces a significant challenge in combating tobacco addiction, particularly among children and youth, with over 100,000 cases of oral cavity cancer reported annually.

With India grappling with the highest prevalence of oral cancer globally, Brahmanand Narayana Hospital emphasizes the urgency of proactive measures to combat this pervasive health issue and safeguard community well-being.

On World No Tobacco Day, the hospital calls for collective action to raise awareness, combat tobacco addiction, and ensure the health and longevity of future generations.

World No Tobacco Day is an annual event celebrated on May 31, organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) to highlight the health risks associated with tobacco use and advocate for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption.
